Founder of Tron, Justin Sun has just announced that he has won an eBay charity auction to have lunch with famous investor Warren Buffet. Following a few teaser tweets over the last few days, he finally divulged the news this afternoon.
I officially announce I’ve won the record-setting 20th-anniversary charity lunch hosted by @WarrenBuffett. I’ll also invite #blockchain industry leaders to meet with a titan of investment. I hope this benefits everyone. #TRON #TRX #BTT #BitTorrent pic.twitter.com/EMZ4TMhgpR

It seems that Sun bid a whopping $4.5 million dollars to the charity auction which has been held by Buffet over the last two decades. The winner is allowed to bring seven friends along to the lunch which will take place with Buffer at a New York steakhouse.
All of the profits from the auction will go to the San Francisco based non-profit called GLIDE Foundation. The organisation focuses on fighting injustice and inequality on behalf of economically deprived communities. They include homeless people, ethnic minorities and members of the LGBTI community.
Sun released a statement empahsising the important work that the foundation does, particularly holistic programmes that benefit the community.
“BitTorrent and TRON’s US headquarters are in San Francisco, and bidding on this charity auction was a key priority for our team. I’m proud to have my bid donated to GLIDE, a foundation that provides critical support for our local homeless community.”
According to the PR, the auction was held in conjunction with the eBay for Charity initiative which allows members of its community to donate to charities via proceeds and additional contributions. Almost $912 million has been raised via the platform to date.
Karen Hanrahan, President and CEO of GLIDE stated that Sun’s donation would “help people overcome barriers such as homelessness, addiction, hunger, and social isolation and reach their full potential”.
The upcoming lunch between Buffet and Sun could be an interesting one. Sun as one of the world’s leading crypto entrepreneurs and Buffet as someone who had a much-publicised negative view of cryptocurrency, once referring to Bitcoin as “probably rat poison squared”. Whilst his views have mellowed somewhat recently, it would be rather interesting to be a fly on the wall at this event.
Sun founded and launched TRON in 2017 and just two years later it ranks as the 10th largest crypto in the world, with a value of $2.6 billion. The Chinese businessman who is just 28 years old hopes that the lunch will pose an opportunity to educate the investor on crypto and its underlying technology, blockchain.
“It is very common in investment circles that people will change their minds,” Sun said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg. “Investment opportunities are best when lots of people are underestimating the technology.”
Sun had previously responded to Buffets negativity towards crypto by pointing out that he had also failed to realise the potential of Amazon, Alphabet (the parent company of Google) and Apple.
“Even one of the most successful investors of all times can sometimes miss a coming wave.”
When asked who Sun would bring to the lunch, he said that he would choose his most persuasive and influential friends in the hopes of getting the 88-year-old multi-billionaire to rethink his opinions.
