Tesla and NHTSA Issue Model Y Recall Over Trailer Brake Light Bug

  • Tesla and the NHTSA issued a recall of the Model Y crossover after it was revealed to be carrying a software bug that affected the trailer brake light.
  • However, Tesla has already fixed this issue with a software update last month, so customers will not have to take their Model Y to the store.
  • It is said that 2,567 Model Y units are affected by this software glitch while the company has also encouraged owners to contact Tesla customer service.

Earlier today, Tesla and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall for the Tesla Model Y over a software glitch that led to the trailer brake light not working. It is said that around 2,567 Model Y units are affected by this glitch.

The good news for existing owners is that Tesla has issued an OTA update last month to fix this. Owners simply have to make sure their Model Y is running the update 2020.36.12 or newer. What this also means is that affected customers likely don’t have to take their Model Y to a Tesla outlet to get this fixed.

Tesla will notify owners, and has released the firmware update over-the-air (OTA) to vehicles as of September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-605-882-4000. Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-20-00-002,” the automaker said.

The NHTSA details the new recall in the following way:

Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2023 Model Y vehicles equipped with a global rear lamp and tow package configuration. A software error prevents the illumination of trailer brake lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

Tesla hasn’t shared details on the number of Model Y cars it has produced so far. The trailer brake lights are optional and do not feature in all units sold so far. However, if you’re a new Model Y customer who has opted for the trailer brake lights, we recommend checking for a software update or contacting Tesla service from the number provided above.
