Nissan’s EV Sales May Have Crossed 500,000 So Far

  • Nissan may have already sold over 500,000 electric vehicles as per data published by the company recently.
  • This is expected to include 470,000 units of the Nissan Leaf alone, while the rest could be accounted for the e-NV200 electric van sales.
  • Nissan has made multiple changes to the Leaf EV and even offers a Leaf Plus model now with a bigger battery and better performance.

Nissan was one of the early manufacturers to invest heavily in the all-electric segment with its super popular Leaf EV. Although the model has seen multiple upgrades since it was first released in 2010, the car is still well-favored among EVs. The company may be nearing a big milestone, or it may have already crossed it as per data published by the company.

As of May 2020, Nissan mentioned that it had sold 470,000 units of the Leaf EV. When we combine the sales of the e-NV200 electric van, the sales figures may have easily breached half a million already. This is a big landmark for Nissan and is a testament to the fact that the company has done exceptionally well over the last few years. The Nissan e-NV200 is an electric cargo utility vehicle that may not have sold as much as the Leaf and is only available in Europe and Japan.

Nissan Leaf

While the Leaf is an excellent option in the mid-range, Nissan doesn’t have too many options in the high-end segment. This is where companies like tesla have really shined with their unique engineering process as well as the ability to please the audiences with features and tech that cannot be rivaled by many in the industry today.

Last month, Nissan announced that it has produced around 42,000 units of the Leaf EV in Spain since 2014. But it’s not clear if all of them have contributed towards the 470,000 figure mentioned by the company recently.

The 2020 Nissan Leaf models come with a 110-kW electric motor that can provide 147 horsepower accompanied by a 40-kWh battery. Nissan also sells Leaf Plus models which come with a larger 62-kWh battery and a 160-kW electric motor that can provide up to 214 horsepower.
