Volvo has officially entered the all-electric business with the XC40 Recharge crossover. This vehicle is expected to hit the markets later this year. A new report suggests that the company may soon bring an all-electric SUV to the market known as the XC100 Recharge. It is said that this SUV will run on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture which exists specifically for all-electric vehicles.
The report adds that the XC100 will have an ultra-luxury design and a few semi-autonomous features. Motor Trend mentions that the car may not be unveiled until 2024 at least. It is said that the XC90 will continue to sell alongside the new XC100. The Volvo XC90 will likely remain a hybrid automobile (PHEV) in future iterations as well, while those seeking an all-electric option can go with the XC100 Recharge.
As for the XC40 which arrives later this year, it’s one of the first Volvo automobiles to come with an Android-powered infotainment system. The company has also mentioned that the EV will have enough space including something known as a “frunk” located under the front hood. Reservations for the vehicle are currently open in the U.S.
The XC100 is certainly an ambitious project, although it seems like the wait just got a little longer. Previous estimates spoke of Volvo’s all-electric SUV coming by 2023. It is believed that the XC100 will be built with two motors, and may have a starting price of around $85,000 which makes sense given the luxury aspect that we mentioned above.
