- The 2022 Hummer EV will reportedly come with removable roof panels that can be manually handled by one person.
- The vehicle is currently estimated to be unveiled soon with a launch to follow in 2023, although recent reports spoke of a potential delay in its unveiling.
- The Hummer EV has been previously said to packing 350-kWh fast-charging, and offering a likely range of 400 miles.
GMC’s big Hummer revival will come in the form of the 2022 Hummer EV. This SUV has been in the pipeline for a while now, although General Motors has only provided sparse information on the vehicle. Well, that changes today with a new revelation suggesting that the Hummer EV may come with removable roof panels. There are going to be four roof panels, supported by a front T-bar that can be removed manually by one person, said company spokesperson Tara Kuhnen while speaking to Car and Driver.
Previously, GM has mentioned that the Hummer EV will come with a 100 horsepower engine and will be available with one, two, or three motors. While a single motor will be used on the rear-wheel-drive versions of the Hummer EV, the all-wheel-drive models will consist of two or three motors. That horsepower we just mentioned makes the Hummer EV capable of reaching 60mph in just 3 seconds. GM has also mentioned that this SUV will be capable of producing 11,500 lb-ft of torque.
A recent report spoke of GMC potentially delaying the unveiling of the Hummer EV. While there’s still no update on that front, it’s clear that 2022 is a more hopeful timeline given the current situation in the auto industry. It has been estimated that the GMC Hummer EV may be priced at around $70,000 for the entry-level versions.
The fact that the upcoming Hummer EV will have removable roof panels makes it comparable to the Jeep Wrangler which uses a similar mechanism. However, it’s uncertain at this point if GM will also offer hard and soft-top versions like on the Wrangler.
It has been previously mentioned that the Hummer EV will be built on the 800-volt architecture and will also possess 350-kWh fast-charging. Based on this, some have predicted that this SUV could offer a range of up to 400 miles.
Update: GMC has posted a video of the removable roof in action and you can catch it below.
