Ford Shows Off Electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, Says It Will ‘Crush’ the Quarter-Mile in 8 Seconds

  • Ford has unveiled a new performance EV known as the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 which can deliver over 1,400 horsepower.
  • This is a one-off vehicle, which means the company may not mass produce the automobile.
  • Ford mentioned that the car will make an appearance at a drag race later this year and that it will “crush the quarter-mile in the low-8-second range.”

Ford has just unveiled a new electric prototype known as the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. Although this will be a one-off electric performance vehicle, it does give us a taste of what the company can achieve with an electric powertrain.

Ford mentions that this car is “projected to crush the quarter-mile in the low-8-second range at more than 170 mph” which sounds pretty impressive. The company has reportedly collaborated with MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV, and Cascadia for this project.

“The battery-powered Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is purpose-built and projected to deliver over 1,400 horsepower and over 1,100 ft.-lbs. of instant torque to demonstrate the capabilities of an electric powertrain in one of the most demanding race environments,” Ford said in a press release.

The company was also kind enough to give us an idea of what this electric powerhouse sounds like in a short video.

Ford has mentioned that the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 will debut sometime later this year at a drag race. The company has previously illustrated what it can do with performance EVs, particularly with the Mustang Lithium which could produce 900 HP of power. Unfortunately, this vehicle was also a one-off prototype with no mass-production plans.

Ford’s commercial vehicles are still lagging behind as far as the extent of their electric performance is concerned. We recently learned about the company’s plans to launch an F-150 hybrid by 2021. Unfortunately, this hybrid will only offer an electric range of 10 miles, the report said.

Ford also shared some images of the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400.
