EV Maker Rivian Apparently Planning a Manufacturing Plant in Europe

  • A new report suggests that Rivian may be considering the setting up of a standalone manufacturing/assembly plant in Europe.
  • It is believed that Germany, Hungary, and the United Kingdom are currently in contention for the Rivian unit.
  • This comes as Rivian looks towards long term goals, which the company says will have to include China and Europe, while also hinting at bringing new EVs tailored for these markets.

EV maker Rivian has made giant strides in the industry even before its vehicles hit the market, although the company has started rolling out electric delivery trucks for Amazon. A new report now suggests that Rivian may be thinking about setting up a new manufacturing plant in Europe.

The report goes on to say that the EV maker is considering countries like Germany, Hungary, and the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, we’re not hearing much else apart from these three choices.

This also happens to coincide with a report from a few months ago which talked about Rivian’s willingness to bring a smaller EV for Europe and Asian markets, particularly China.

“We wouldn’t be serious about building a car company if we weren’t thinking about China and Europe as important markets long term,” Rivian CEO, R.J. Scaringe said in an interview with Reuters in November. It is interesting to note here that the CEO also clarified that these plans could be some distance away, so it may take a while until we hear more on this.

While it may seem like Rivian is trying to do too many things, it’s worth noting that the company is on course to deliver the electric delivery trucks ordered by Amazon on time. While the R1T and R1S EVs will officially hit the markets later this year, it’s unclear when these EVs will make their way to non-U.S. markets.

As for the R1T, Rivian has previously said that it will be available by June this year while the R1S electric SUV will only be available by August. The company has said that it will bring the two vehicles to Europe and China by 2022.
