BMW iX1 Electric Crossover Spotted During Road Testing

  • The BMW iX1 crossover EV has leaked out in a new series of pictures thanks to spy photos captured during road testing.
  • The BMW iX1 crossover is believed to be the company’s fully-electric version of the X1 which is expected to be launched by the end of 2021.
  • The iX1 is expected to feature the same powertrain and battery pack as the recently announced iX3 electric SUV.

Following the launch of the BMW iX3 a few months ago, a new crossover by the manufacturer has now been revealed in spy shots. Known as the iX1, it is said that this will be the all-electric version of the BMW X1 which made the news previously. As you would expect, the iX1 was spotted during road-testing and has all the bearings of an unreleased vehicle, including the camouflage to hide its design attributes.

It’s worth noting that the iX1 doesn’t look too different from the X1 in terms of design, which was always expected. While there’s no information on the powertrain it’s running on, it goes without saying that it will use the same engine and battery pack as the iX3.

This should mean a single motor 282 horsepower engine powering the rear wheels, and a battery pack to run well over 200 miles on a single charge. It should also come with a torque of 295 pound-feet.

The standard ICE (internal combustion engine) and hybrid versions of the BMW X1 are not expected to launch until the end of 2021 or early 2022. Reports suggest that the iX1 will only break cover a few months after the X1, so we could be waiting until at least mid-2022 for this crossover EV.

BMW iX1 - Side

It is said that the iX1 may also borrow some design and styling cues from the recently launched iX3, particularly with regard to colored accents as well as the aerodynamic alloy wheels.

iX1 - Back

BMW is also said to be working on its flagship, iNext, with a design preview expected next week. So it’s clear that the company will have a handful of fully-electric vehicles over the next couple of years.
