Bakkt’s Bitcoin futures to start trading on December 12, 2018

ICE Futures U.S., Inc. will list the new Bakkt Bitcoin (USD) Daily Futures Contract for trading on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, according to the notice.

The Bakkt Bitcoin (USD) Daily Futures Contract is a physically-settled daily futures contract for bitcoin held in Bakkt LLC, ICE’s Digital Asset Warehouse, and will be cleared by ICE Clear US, Inc.

These contracts will be traded on ICE’s electronic trading platform, which offers industry-leading speed and reliability, regulated by the CFTC. All trades are cleared and guaranteed by ICE Clearing US, the central counterparty for all ICE cleared forex futures trades. Trades will result in physically delivered Bitcoin in ICE’s regulated Digital Asset Warehouse. Market participants are eligible to transact with any other market participants. ICE physically delivered bitcoin futures offer trading and hedging opportunities.

ICE Futures U.S., Inc notice

“Each futures contract calls for delivery of one bitcoin held in the Bakkt Digital Asset Warehouse, and will trade in U.S. dollar terms. One daily contract will be listed for trading each Exchange Business Day,”  the notice says.

The Bakkt platform is expected to include federally regulated markets and warehousing along with merchant and consumer applications. Its first use cases will be for trading and conversion of Bitcoin versus fiat currencies, as Bitcoin is today the most liquid digital cryptocurrency.

Earlier this year,  Jeffrey C. Sprecher, the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Intercontinental Exchange, said that in bringing regulated, connected platform together with institutional and consumer applications for digital assets, company aims to build confidence in the asset class on a global scale by bringing transparency and trust to previously unregulated markets.

Additional information on the new futures contract will be made available closer to the launch date.
